CSA Z240 RV Series Standard Update

The CSA Z240 RV Series Standard Edition was completed in 2014 although there some minor updates in 2020 when the technical committee voted to change electrical components (wiring) to meet the NFPA 1192 Standard.

CRVA has entered into an agreement with CSA to update the code which will further synchronize to changes that have been made to the most recent edition of NFPA 1192.

Please contact us at info@crva.ca if you wish to learn more or if you are interested in becoming a member of the Technical Committee.

Transport Canada

Drive-Away/ Tow-Away companies transporting RVs to Dealerships in Canada are currently required to maintain a daily written log of driving hours. Transport Canada has mandated that written logs would no longer valid in Canada and an ELD Device must be used to track a driver’s hours of driving time effective June 202, but this has been delayed now until January 2023. We submitted a request for Exemption on behalf of the Canadian RV Industry on January 7th, 2022.

On August 19, the Canadian Recreational Vehicle Association and the RVDA of Canada met with the Executive Director and other representatives with Transport Canada to discuss the exemption request. During the meeting, their efforts were partially successful, as Transport Canada produced a draft document titled “Driveaway and towaway industry— exemption from having to use an electronic logging device to monitor compliance with the Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations.”

However, they were cautioned that Transport Canada still needs the support of all or most of the Canadian Provincial Authorities to move forward with its approval. The Canadian Recreational Vehicle Association and the RVDA of Canada were also told during the meeting that there were four provinces who have expressed initial pushback to the exemption request for varying reasons (the others seemed to support the exemption), with the four implying that public safety would be impacted if granted. Given this feedback, Transport Canada asked the Canadian Recreational Vehicle Association and RVDA of Canada for information that further supported the exemption request that they could present to the provinces.

CRVA is attending a TC Meeting in Ottawa on November 3rd. We expect that all Provinces will be present and that we will have a further update afterwards.

This is a critical issue for the RV industry, and the RVDA of Canada, the Canadian Recreational Vehicle Association, and the RV Industry Association will keep pushing forward.

RV Transportation to RV Retailers in Newfoundland

Effective September 1, Marine Atlantic eliminated the CAB (Commercial Other PRV) classification for units under 30 feet. RV drivers who previously traveled under this travel classification now can only reserve a crossing as a passenger-related unit (which does not provide access to a commercial overnight berth) or travel on a first come first served basis (which removes any assurance of a timely travel schedule) as a commercial related unit.

Marine Atlantic no longer recognizes the vehicle signage or commercial manifest documentation carried by our transporting vehicles.

Shipping to Atlantic Canada RV dealers

CRVA is working with the Atlantic RVDA and its members to advocate against this change in policy which will affect drivers returning to the mainland. For more information, click on the following link.
