Family is one of the most important things in life. Family is there to support you, and provide you with lasting memories and lessons throughout life. At Campers World RV Sales & Service, family has always been of great importance to not only the staff, but the customers as well. Brian and Margaret Dahmer, the founder of Campers World, has prided himself with making sure every RV enthusiast inside Campers World RV has felt respected and appreciated.
Humble Beginnings
Creating the company in 1989, Dahmer has spent over 30 years in the RV industry. Originally a mechanic by trade, Dahmer had to alter his career path due to a workplace accident. After the accident, Dahmer purchased a motorhome, and began taking his family camping regularly. Dahmer started renting the trailer out to customers, and discovered a love for Recreational Vehicle sales. “{Brian} started renting the trailer out, and it was quite successful. It was not very heard of for people to be renting their own property at that point.” Said Mike Dahmer, Brian’s son. “In 1986, people began coming back to my father and inquiring if they could find an RV to buy because they enjoyed it so much, and that snowballed into my father creating Campers World.”
This empowered Dahmer, as after the accident, he spent many hours working towards his dream of opening an RV sales business. As the business began to pickup steam, Dahmer brought his wife Margaret and both of his sons, Chris and Mike, into the business. Dahmer has strived to keep a familial environment within Campers World RV, and has spent much of his time with the company personally speaking with customers, making sure they got exactly what they are looking for.
Integrity is Key
Both Chris and Mike Dahmer have vivid memories of their father introducing them to camping, and spoke at length on how their upbringing led them to further pursue a career within the vehicle market, even after they had moved on from their family’s company. It wasn’t only a passion for vehicles that Brian introduced his sons to, but also a strong sense of integrity and friendliness towards others. “Getting to know a client on a personal level, for quality of service, and even for friendship, has been something I value, understand and look for in other careers and jobs.” Chris Dahmer said. For Campers World, the company was built through integrity. “Standing behind the products, service, and the intent behind things, makes sure the customer gets exactly what they need.”
Dahmer’s focus was in maintaining personal relationships with his fellow RV enthusiasts. “The personal side of everything is near and dear to my dad and my moms’ heart,” Mike stated. “We would build personal relationships with the customers, and even went out camping to Darian Lake with two other families, we also ended up hiring two customers as well.”
Although Brian is the face of the company, his wife Margaret also puts in large amounts of work behind the scenes, keeping the business alive and well. Margaret has assisted Brian with running the business since the company’s inception, being formidable business partners alongside each other. “My mother knows everything, she does the book keeping, advertising, and even helps with maintenance. As much as you can say about my dad starting the business, my mom definitely helped keep it afloat.” Mike said.
Making Camping Accessible
Campers World RV is also a trailblazer within the RV sales industry, making a push to sell RV’s and equipment accessible to people with disabilities. What are normally very expensive products, Brian made sure to keep affordable for everyone, as Dahmer had a firm belief that no one should be denied the ability to camp. “My parents found that for pricing [accessible vehicles], they would normally be two to three times the price.” Chris Dahmer said. “My parents found that appalling, and have tried their best to help anyone and everyone, and now have people emailing them constantly about purchasing [an accessible RV].”
The business has been located in Kitchener, ON. Since its inception, and has become a staple of RV sales within Ontario. Their business philosophy has continued to resonate with customers and has been a testament to the company’s longevity. Brian has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the Recreational Vehicle scene in Ontario and has done so not only through business, but through his love for RV’s and most importantly, family.
